Roof cleaning & moss removal

Mosses, lichens and algae hold water and end up lifting the tiles. Alpilles Rénovation cleans roofs and clears moss across the Alpilles and the Pays d'Arles: gentle brushing, low-pressure rinsing, moss treatment, then a protective water repellent. An answer within 48 h to agree a date; the free quotation follows the visit.

What we do

What we offer

Mechanical moss removal

Brushing and low-pressure rinsing; never an aggressive pressure washer, which erodes the tile and drives water under the covering.

Fungicidal and algaecidal treatment

Destroys mosses, lichens and spores down to the root, to delay regrowth.

Protective water repellent

Gives the tile back its water-shedding power: water runs off, dirt clings less, the covering stays sound for longer.

Clearing the gutters

Deposits, leaves and pine needles cleared, downpipes checked.

Checking the covering

Broken or shifted tiles spotted during the work: small repairs are flagged and costed separately, wearing our roofer hat.

A frequent question

How often should a roof be cleared of moss in Provence?

As a general rule, every 5 to 10 years. A roof facing due south and swept by the mistral stays clean for a long time; a north-facing slope, under trees or near water, greens over far more quickly. The right interval is judged by eye: cushions of moss, black streaks, gutters that block up.

Waiting too long is expensive. Moss holds moisture against the terracotta, which turns porous and frost-sensitive; the cushions lift the tiles and water finds its way to the battens. Regular maintenance pushes back the roof renewal by just as much.

And before a sale, a clean roof changes how a buyer sees the house — it is often the first big item they size up from the street.

Step by step

Our method

Roofer inspecting a tuile canal roof overgrown with moss and lichen, gutter clogged with pine needles

Inspection

State of the tiles, the ridge and the junction details; we check that the covering can take the work.

Moss removal on a tuile canal roof with a low-pressure brush lance, the cleaned tile recovering its terracotta tone

Cleaning

Brushing, then low-pressure rinsing from ridge to eaves, in the direction of flow.

Applying a fungicidal and algaecidal treatment with a backpack sprayer to a tuile canal roof

Treatment

Applying the fungicide and algaecide to the dried-off covering.

Roller application of a protective water repellent on tuile canal where water beads up

Water repellent

As a finish, to prolong the effect of the cleaning and protect the tile.

A Provençal specificity

A tuile canal is not cleaned just any way

Provençal tiles, often old and porous, tolerate neither high pressure nor harsh products. Used badly, a pressure lance shifts the tiles, strips their surface and drives water where it must never go.

We work gently, with products suited to terracotta, and we leave the gutters clean behind us. If the timber of the structure is showing signs of weakness too, timber treatment can be scheduled straight afterwards.
